GEOLOGY OF THE NORTH COAST OF THE SERRES DE LLEVANT FROM CALA TORTA TO S'ARENALET

  Information

Recommended route.

Continuing the route and, as we have commented previously, there are abundant patches of fossil beaches and dunes of the Pleistocene (points A).

At Ses Maganetes, at the mouth of a small stream bed, we can observe some strange rocky steps of light brown colour: these are calcareous flows that cover the ancient fossil dunes, which are partially eroded

Calcareous flows at the mouth of the stream bed (point B).

The formation of calcareous flows is a relatively rapid geological process, often linked to waterfalls (where the pressure of carbon dioxide is drastically reduced).

The calcareous flows are a valuable material from both the paleoclimatic and paleontological points of view, since it contains isotopes of oxygen which indicate the temperature at the moment of its formation and can fossilise both plant and animal remains.
