The Tramuntana region of Menorca is characterised by the great variety of rocks that make it up and that imbue it with great geological value, which means we can state that Menorca possesses an exceptional geodiversity. By contrast, there is a tendency to attribute the lands of the Migjorn region (which embraces the whole of the south of the island and a large part of the northwest) to a single rock of completely homogeneous characteristics: marès. The truth is that the colour, consistency, porosity and elements that make up marès can be very variable. Also, marès is by no means the only rock that makes up the region.
The proposed route aims to show some of the most peculiar traits of the rocks in the Migjorn region of Menorca, highlighting the components that go into them and their general features, such as the place and conditions of their formation. In turn, the aim is to ensure that the uninitiated in geology can see the huge variety of details that a rock displays, which may at first seem completely homogeneous and with no apparent interest.

It is important to stress that the route runs through a major fossil site, but that today the presence of fossils is very scant. The suggested trail could be much more interesting if it had been possible to prevent years of fossil scavenging to collect them or simply for a whim. Logically, this scavenging must make us stop and think about the huge attraction that area would offer if all of this had not occurred. So, if you see a fossil, it is very important that you do not remove it and that you leave it where it is in order to conserve the geological outcrops and allow everyone else to be able to enjoy it just the same, and so experience the trail in the same way.

The trail begins at the En Vermell cliff, which you can get to from the S’Algar residential area at the crossroads between Avinguda 7 and Carrer 25 streets, leading you to the coast. The striking red colour of the rocks helps you identify them. The trail continues along the coast as far as the Torre d’Alcalfar tower in a route of some 2.5 km, not counting the return journey.
