THE MIOCENE REEFS, PLIOCENE BEACHES AND PLEISTOCENE DUNES OF ES BANCALS

  General data

The coastal sector from Cala Pi to Es Bancals is an excellent place for observing the most recent geology of the island. In the first place, there are materials from the Upper Miocene (approximately 11.6-5.3 Ma), vestiges of the large coral barriers that populated the Balearic waters in those times. These formations are eroded in their upper part and extensive beaches having been deposited during the Pliocene (5.3-2.5 Ma). The youngest materials correspond to the Middle and Upper Pleistocene (470- 125 thousand years) and constitute a succession of dunes and paleosols with sporadic marine deposits. All of these materials display signs of having been affected by tsunamis. The geology of this zone is very important in indicating the evolution of the climate in the island over the last few million years.
